How I Turned My Phone from a Distraction into a Study Weapon
If you're anything like me, you've probably told yourself, "I'll just check one notification." Then suddenly, two hours later, you're deep in a TikTok hole, and your notes are still untouched.
Been there. Too many times.
But one day, I realized something: my phone doesn’t have to be the enemy. With the right apps and habits, it can actually boost my productivity. So I flipped the script—and now, my phone’s part of the squad that helps me pass exams, not fail them.
Here’s how I turned my phone from a time-wasting monster into my ultimate study sidekick:
1. Focus Mode = Beast Mode
I started using Focus Mode on Android (or Screen Time on iPhone). With one tap, my phone blocks all social apps for a set time. No more tempting notifications or random scroll sessions.
Bonus: It feels like activating a force field around my brain.
2. Swapped Scrolling for Study Apps
Instead of opening Instagram, I trained myself to open apps like:
-
Forest – Grow a virtual tree by staying focused (I weirdly got attached to not killing my tree).
-
Quizlet – Create flashcards for quick review while waiting in line or riding the jeep.
-
Notion – My digital planner, reviewer, and to-do list in one app.
Now, I scroll through reviewers instead of reels. Wild, right?
3. Study Playlists Only
My Spotify now has a "Study Zone" playlist. No lyrics, just lo-fi beats, OPM instrumentals, and background noise that makes me feel like I'm in a cozy coffee shop. I only play it during study time—my brain associates it with focus now.
Pro tip: Search for “UP Diliman study sounds” or “BGC café ambience” for local vibes.
4. Pomodoro Timer = Study Boss
You may have read the Pomodoro Technique from my previous post 5 Study Hacks Every Filipino Students Need To Know (That Don't Involve Allnighters). I will mention it again because IT WORKS!! I downloaded a Pomodoro timer app and used it to study in chunks: 25 minutes work, 5 minutes break. It made study sessions less painful and more doable.
Every time the break hits? I reward myself with ONE meme. Just one. Okay… maybe three.
5. Turned My Lock Screen into a Study Reminder
I made my lock screen a screenshot of my reviewer or a motivational quote. So whenever I unlock my phone, boom—instant reminder that I should be studying.
Quote of the week: “You can’t pass an exam you didn’t study for. Even the smartest people have to review.”
6. Group Chats = Review Buddies
Instead of using Messenger for tsismis only, I started a group chat with my classmates just for reviewers, practice tests, and rants about exams. We hype each other up and quiz each other randomly.
We still send memes—but educational ones. Sort of.
7. Google Calendar & Reminders
Every deadline, quiz, and exam gets scheduled on my phone calendar. I even color-code them. Red = big exam. Yellow = chill assignment. Purple = pretend-to-study day.
Notifications remind me before I can forget.
Final Thoughts
Your phone is not the problem. It’s how you use it. Once you take control, it becomes your most powerful study tool. So instead of fighting the distraction, train it to work for you. You don’t have to give up your phone to be productive—you just have to boss it around a little.
Trust me, your future self will thank you.
